Behold, the Lion has Triumphed - BWV 173 & BWV 219

  • St Stephen's Anglican Church Newtown 189 Church Street Newtown, NSW, 2042 Australia (map)

Enjoy the sublime world of Johann Sebastian Bach's cantatas as the Sydney Cantata Project presents their next concert on Saturday 3 August at 3pm at St Stephen's Anglican Church, Newtown.

This programme presents the cantatas of three composers with interconnected lives - Dieterich Buxtehude, Georg Philipp Telemann and Johann Sebastian Bach. Buxtehude was a hugely influential figure and hero to Bach - a 20 year old Bach walked the 400km journey to Lübeck to hear Buxtehude play the organ! Bach's most significant position as the Director of Music at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig was a position originally offered to Telemann, which he later declined.

Buxtehude's Jesu meines Lebens Leben encapsulates the expressive power of his music, an almost hypnotic chaconne. Telemann's Siehe, es hat überwunden der Löwe was originally wrongly attributed to being composed by Bach, and featuring an triumphant bass aria with trumpets at centre stage. Finally, Bach's Erhöhtes Fleisch und Blut emerged as a birthday cantata for Prince Leopold, and was recalled for his first cantata cycle in Leipzig with a new set of texts.

We look forward to seeing you there!
